30 October 2013

Hi all! I’m actually back into the blogging groove once again, which I’m pretty happy about. Today’s post isn’t going to be terribly long, but I’m going to just talk about my plans for NaNoWriMo this year.

For those who might not know what NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month for long) is, it’s where scads of people across the world try to write 50,000 words during the month of November. That’s 1,667 words per day. I’ve decided to do “Reverse” NaNoWriMo this year, meaning I start the month out writing lots of words (3346, to be exact), and ideally I end the last day of the month writing only one. Yes, you read that right: one word.

I have to be honest, I didn’t come up with this plan. It was linked to on Twitter by NaNoWriMo, and it’s over at a blog called The Crazed Mom. [Here is the URL with details: http://crazedmom.com/reverse-nanowrimo/].

I think that it’ll be a great way for me to start on this year’s project, as the end of the month looks like it might be crazier than the beginning of the month.

I should be keeping y’all updated at least on a weekly basis as to how I’m doing. By Saturday the 2nd, I should be at 6,562 words, for the week ending on the 9th I should have 19,297, the next week I should have 13,673, 8,047 by the 23rd and only 2,421 words for the final week of the month!

28 October 2013

Last week was hectic, to say the least. I apologize for once again falling behind on the blogging. I STILL haven’t kicked this cold and I had a whole bunch of other projects from school (some of them quite big and all of them unexpected) dumped on me in the last couple of days. That and just general mental exhaustion put me behind in my plans for last week.

However, I’m going to try and get ahead this week, and I’m not going to let this dang cold beat me! With that in mind, this week I’m going to get as much done as I can in terms of school work so that the rest of the semester can flow as smoothly as possible. I also need to start making a more concrete outline for the project I’m going to be working on for NaNoWriMo this year. That (for anyone considering participating in National Novel Writing Month this year) begins on November 1st.

With that in mind, I’m going to be busy this next month, BUT I plan on blogging more regularly. In all honesty, it’s easier to blog when I’m actually writing and doing things that I think are worth blogging about. Yes, Kyra and I have wonderful adventures with our baby, but those are parts of my personal life that I’d like to keep more personal.

So, here’s a little bit of a preview of things I’m planning to put up in the near future:

  • Book reviews of Dan Wells’ Partials and Fragments
  • Book review of Brandon Sanderson’s Steelheart
  • Our Halloween costumes (and the epic saga of their creation)
  • Perhaps a couple of game reviews of some things I’ve played recently

And that’s what I’m planning to work on folks. Also expect some news about my NaNoWriMo plans either Wednesday or Friday. I’m doing it a little different this year, so stay tuned!

22 October 2013

Greetings from the land of mucus and sinus congestion. Yes, I have succumbed to the bug that’s been going around. It is, after all, that time of year, though I don’t think it’s normal to feel like you’re shooting a grand piano through your nasal passage every time you blow your nose.  I think my immune system is down at the moment too due to stress and little sleep, among other things, so I can’t say I’m surprised. Anyway, long story short, because of things like the grand pianos and rhinoceroses that seem to be inhabiting the space behind my eyes (and trickling nasty little things into my nose and throat), I was unable to get this post finished yesterday. In fact, I was unable to get really anything meaningful done yesterday.

Kyra, however, did get a lot of stuff done on our costumes. There will be a post about this shortly (with pictures)!

17 October 2013

It’s been a while since I’ve posted. I also realize that I’ve started several posts with almost those exact words. I ALSO realize that I should apologize and feel guilty, but the truth is that I’ve needed the break.

As I may have mentioned, I started back with school for the year, and it’s been a little crazy. I’ve had oodles and gobs of things that I’ve been working on including a paper per week, some research projects, and countless other smaller tasks. However, I’ve started to get ahead in most of my classes, and by the end of the month, I’m hoping to be far enough ahead that I’ll be able to really focus on writing for NaNoWriMo (another post about that HERE).

November is going to be tough, but I think that it’ll be perfectly doable. If I could do it last year, I can definitely crank 50,000 words out in 30 days this year.

On that note, I really need to take that month and make it valuable because I haven’t been able to write much since the beginning of the semester. I’ve had some time to write (I’d be lying if I said I didn’t), but I’ve been mentally exhausted with everything I’ve been doing (see the above list for details).

With that in mind, I’m also thinking about revamping this blog. Where I had been posting every day, I’m thinking that now I’m only going to post every Monday, Wednesday and Friday with the possibility of an extra post here and there. With the pressure of my current schedule, I think that’s all I’m going to have time for.

Nevertheless this should all be temporary, as I graduate in the spring. Starting about the middle of May I should be able to devote more time and energy to both the blog and to my actual writing. In terms of the blog, I have been working on revamping what I want the blog’s content to be/look like. I can’t decide if I want to keep it purely writing-based or if I should do something a little more casual, or in other words, if I should talk about other things as well. I’m leaning toward the latter, so stay tuned.

Also, I’ve considered doing book reviews here once in a while. Ideally I want to only review books that I think are worth reading and recommending to visitors to the site. I want to stay away from harsh criticism. I’m up for suggestions on what to read, but understand that I don’t have the time (at least right now) to do a book review every week. Expect one once a month.

Anyway, I think that’s all I wanted to say here. I’m going to be posting a little more regularly again, so stay tuned!
